Industries
How a repo gets into an industry
Each industry has a fixed list of GitHub topics and words. A repo scores points for the topics on the list, for list words in its description (whole words, any case) and for list words in its name. The total is the confidence: high, medium or low. High needs two kinds of evidence to agree, so one matching topic alone is never enough. The counts here are high repos only. A repo is in at most two industries, so the counts add up to more than the number of repos with an industry. The strong terms of each industry are shown on its page.
We sort the 2,500 repos that have a page on this site, which are the most starred of the 12,579 we track. That is why the counts lean towards developer tools and big projects. Medium and low repos are left out for now: the hand check found 60% and 38% of them in the right industry.
Questions
How does RepoTrending sort repos into industries?
By matching words. Each industry has a list of GitHub topics and words, and a repo scores points for the topics, description words and name words that are on the list. The score gives a confidence: high, medium or low. A repo is in at most two industries, and in none when nothing matches. It reads no README and no code, and uses no AI model.
How accurate is the sort?
Not fully, but the pages use only the level we trust. On Oct 25, 2026 we read 150 sorted repos by hand, 50 at each confidence: 46 of 50 high (92%) were in the right industry, against 30 of 50 medium (60%) at medium and 19 of 50 low (38%) at low. The counts and the pages below use high repos only.
Why do some industries have no page?
RepoTrending tracks repos that are gaining stars, and most of them are tools for developers. Industries such as sales, health, legal or real estate have few repos here so far. An industry gets a page only when at least 5 of the repos we track match it at high confidence.
Are the rankings different from the main ones?
No. An industry page uses the same Today, This week and This month rankings as the rest of the site, limited to the repos in that industry. A gain is the stars in the latest daily snapshot minus the stars N days earlier.
