A big one-day star gain tells you how many stars moved, not why they moved. Four checks narrow it down: how big the gain is for that repo, how old the repo is, whether its forks look usual, and whether the count holds a week later. None of them proves a star is real or bought.
On Oct 24, 2026 the 100 biggest gains among our 12,464 tracked repos ran from 268 stars to 6,448, and 28 of the 100 added 5% or more to the repo’s own total. This guide is for a developer who sees a repo jump on a ranking and wants to decide whether to look closer. We use the day’s real numbers as examples and name no repo as suspect: a big gain has many honest causes, such as a launch post, a mention in a newsletter or a big account sharing a link.
What is a big gain for this repo?
Divide the gain by the repo’s total stars. The top 100 of the day added a median of 1.6% to their own totals, and the median across all 12,464 tracked repos was 0.01%. The ten biggest gains in stars:
| Repo | Gained | Total stars | Share of total | Created | Forks per 100 stars |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| morluto/rea | +6,448 | 373,156 | 1.7% | Apr 14, 2026 | 25.0 |
| Gathin23/cleanyourtv | +3,563 | 27,926 | 12.8% | Oct 17, 2026 | 11.2 |
| cloudflare/security-audit-skill | +2,425 | 42,112 | 5.8% | Jun 18, 2026 | 6.3 |
| Ebony-Vinyl/dsh-our-free-model | +2,173 | 39,120 | 5.6% | Sep 24, 2026 | 2.9 |
| debpalash/VoiceStudio | +1,482 | 83,321 | 1.8% | Apr 9, 2026 | 11.0 |
| DietrichGebert/ponytail | +1,192 | 174,793 | 0.7% | Jun 12, 2026 | 5.4 |
| deepseek-ai/deepseek-harness | +1,169 | 259,436 | 0.5% | Aug 13, 2026 | 12.1 |
| deepseek-ai/DeepInfer | +1,133 | 21,117 | 5.4% | Oct 16, 2026 | 11.1 |
| xerj-org/xerj | +1,061 | 14,199 | 7.5% | Jun 30, 2026 | 6.9 |
| stablyai/orca | +1,013 | 103,864 | 1.0% | Mar 17, 2026 | 6.3 |
The same size of gain means different things. morluto/rea added 6,448 stars, the most of the day, but that is 1.7% of 373,156. Gathin23/cleanyourtv added 3,563, which is 12.8% of 27,926, so the repo grew by about an eighth in a day. The first is a large repo having a big day; the second is a repo that grew by about an eighth in 24 hours. Neither number says which is “real”; they say where to look. To see how a gain compares with a repo of the same size, read how many stars is a good day on GitHub.
- 268starsthe smallest gain in the top 100
- 28repos gained 5% or moreof their own total
- 26repos 30 days old or less
- 40,255starsthe median total of the top 100
How old is the repo?
Age changes what a gain means. A repo created a week ago has had no time to collect stars, so 3,563 in a day is most of its life. A repo created years ago that gets 3,563 in a day has had something happen to it. Among the 100 biggest gains, the age at Oct 24 was:
| Age of the repo | Repos in the top 100 |
|---|---|
| 30 days or less | 26 |
| 31 to 90 days | 10 |
| 91 to 364 days | 40 |
| A year or more | 24 |
So big gains are not a young-repo effect only. cloudflare/security-audit-skill, created Jun 18, 2026, gained 2,425 stars at 128 days old. For how the totals of old and young repos compare, read stars per year.
Do the forks move with the stars?
Look at forks per 100 stars. The median for the top 100 gainers is 10.0, and for the 2,500 repos with a page on Oct 24 it is 11.0. The ten above range from 2.9 to 25.0.
A fork is a copy someone made to work with, so a repo that people use usually collects forks along with stars. A ratio far from the usual is a prompt to open the repo and look, not a verdict: documentation and course repos have many forks per star, and a new tool announced in a post can have few. How to check a GitHub repo before you depend on it gives the usual range by language.
Does the gain last?
That is the check that matters most, and one day can’t do it. A surge from a launch often fades to the repo’s old pace, and a surge that reverses is a sign worth a look. On Oct 24 the repo tek-sys-hub/Rubix-lang went from 1,902 stars to 29. We don’t know why, and one drop proves nothing about what was there before.
What research says is limited to what its authors measured. A study of GitHub stars by He and five other authors, “Six Million (Suspected) Fake Stars in GitHub”, says in its abstract that fake stars give a repository a short-term boost in popularity, lasting under two months, and that they are mostly used to promote short-lived phishing malware repos, then AI and LLM, blockchain, tool and tutorial repos. It is a detection study with its own method; we have not tried it on our data.
You can’t read who starred a repo and when from GitHub unless the repo is yours. The REST API can attach a timestamp to each star, with the media type application/vnd.github.star+json, but GitHub’s documentation says access to the stargazers listing endpoints will be limited to admins and collaborators. What a visitor can do is watch the count over days. That is what our windows do: the first weekly gains arrive Oct 30 and the first monthly ones Nov 22, and daily, weekly or monthly explains what each shows.
What can one day not tell you?
It can’t tell a launch from a campaign, and we don’t try. We don’t check for bought or farmed stars yet, so every gain on this site is what GitHub shows and nothing more. The ranking on the home page lists the repos with a page in order of the gain, and stars gained vs total stars says why the gain, not the total, is the number we rank by.
How the repos are found, and what the gain counts, is on how we rank. Open morluto/rea or cloudflare/security-audit-skill to see the numbers we hold for a repo: its stars, forks, creation date and license.
Frequently asked questions
How can you tell if a GitHub star surge is real?
You can’t from one day. Check the size of the gain against the repo’s total, its age, whether its forks are in the usual range, and whether the count holds over the next week. We don’t check for bought or farmed stars yet.
How many repos gain a lot of stars in one day?
Few. On Oct 24, 2026, 262 of the 12,464 repos we track gained 100 or more stars and 10 gained 1,000 or more.
Do only new repos have big one-day gains?
No. Of the 100 biggest gains on Oct 24, 2026, 26 were repos created in the previous 30 days and 24 were a year old or more. The other 50 were between 31 and 364 days old.
Can you see who starred a GitHub repo, and when?
Not on a repo that isn’t yours. GitHub’s REST documentation says access to the stargazers listing endpoints will be limited to admins and collaborators from July 2026, so a visitor can’t pull another repo’s star timeline.

Data used
Source for every row: RepoTrending, GitHub REST API (public repository search, read-only), snapshots of Oct 23 and Oct 24, 2026 (collector export gains.json and repos.json, run of 2026-10-24), counted by RepoTrending. A gain is the star count at the Oct 24 snapshot minus the count 24 hours earlier. The 100 biggest gains are the 100 highest today values of the 12,464 tracked repos with a gain (ties go to more total stars, then the name); each has a page, so its creation date and forks are in repos.json. Age is the days from the creation date to Oct 24, 2026. Forks per 100 stars is forks divided by total stars, times 100. Quotes come from the abstract of arXiv 2412.13459 (version 2, Sep 6, 2025) and from GitHub’s REST documentation “REST API endpoints for starring” (docs.github.com), both read Oct 24, 2026 and read again on the approval day, Oct 24, 2026, with the same wording (the arXiv page still shows version 2 of Sep 6, 2025; the GitHub page still dates the stargazers change to July 2026).
